VO Studio Mindset: Three Simple Things – Tuesday Voiceover Tech Tip

The ridiculous glee experienced when you decide to go ahead and send that first take…

It’s easy to get stale… another similar script appears in the inbox and we trot out an approach that worked before. Repeat that a few times and it’s easy to lose the spark of excitement when stepping into the booth on the next audition. That’s OK… it happens to everyone.

Here are Three Simple Things to help reinvigorate your next audition –

Send your first take

Did that make you gulp a bit? What if you challenged yourself to actually send that first take? If you have spent any time developing your skills through classes and coaching, you likely have a strong skillset. But, we get in our booths and let ourselves off the hook, recording take after take until we start to lose the thread and any enthusiasm. Committing to sending the first take forces you to make decisions before you get behind the mic, and it sharpens focus when in the moment of performance. I’m not saying to send a take which isn’t competitive, but I’ll bet the better stuff happens early on in the process. Maybe that first take is just the ticket.

Perfect is boring

It cracked me up when Coach Beard said exactly this in the final episode of Ted Lasso. I use that phrase in almost every class I teach. In this time of AI intrusions into most creative areas, it’s important to ask why we still want to hear live music or see handcrafted art. I’m still convinced that the very imperfection of our actions is what captures our interest. In the moment of creation, we miss the mark and then must correct. Those realtime corrections are most often where the brilliance lies.

Have fun

During the toughest moments of my VO journey, I’ve been lucky enough to be reminded why I love this biz: continually meeting amazingly creative individuals who inspire me, others who challenge me to reinforce my skills, and those who spur me into less well-known terrain. In all those cases, “I get to do voiceover…” burbles up in my brain and it still gives me a deep, warm glow. As long as we can remember that this is ultimately a fun way to make a living, we’ll bring the best of ourselves to the moment.
