In the Voiceover Studio: An Accumulation of Skills – Tuesday VO Tech Tip

Sometimes we react spontaneously – grabbing the right setting on an EQ or moving the microphone a bit to fix a flaw in our sound – then realize that we didn’t think about it. We just reacted to something we heard and simply fixed it. We realize that we’ve internalized the lessons.

It’s a glorious moment. That which may have been mysterious and clumsy now becomes a reliable tool.

While I often focus on the technical skills we need in our voiceover recording studio, the same is true for our performance techniques. We try. We fail. We refine. We try again. Things get better. We gain control and a deeper understanding these iterations.

If we can recognize our competency in one area, it can give us confidence that it will appear in others. That way of working to learn software, effects, and computer skills transfers nicely to those other areas. Our challenge in voiceover draws from both the technical and the creative. Those skills we’ve built up are how we react and grow.

Winter Solstice Wishes –
Solstices are probably my favorite times of the year.
They are a pair of days – one with little darkness, the other with little light.

It feels as though for the past few years, we’ve needed these cyclical moments even more. It can be tough to mark the days when you work from the same place, with perhaps more seclusion than might be preferred.

Winter Solstice is a good opportunity to bring some light to those around us, reminding them that the days will again get longer and brighter as we move forward.

Best wishes to you, and thank you for your support and focus.

Note – this was originally shared to my email community on December 21, 2022. May these wishes reach you at whatever time you read this.

Want to receive these resources (and more!) the day they come out?
This information recently went out directly to my email community. Each week I send out a new article about using recording technology in your home voiceover studio, and how to balance those technical challenges with the need to be creative behind the microphone.
If you would like to join in to receive those emails the day they publish, please take a moment to share your contact information through this sign up form.
Thank you!
