Weekly VO Workflow: Process Over Perfection

As the calendar wraps around, we seem hard wired to take stock. There’s a tendency to lean into numbers and give ourselves a pass/fail for goals achieved. Tracking numbers and identifying causes provides hard data to refine our approach and patch failing systems. As we tally our efforts, there may be some solace in recognizing the challenges of a difficult economy, impact of world events, immediate pressures of unique situations, and all those things out of our control. None of us pursue life in a vacuum.
I find it helpful to recognize that there’s no inherent finality in the “year end” as designated by the calendar. While the fresh start of the new year can be a good excuse to review what worked and what may need improvement, the end of one calendar rolls right into the beginning of the next one with no pause. The things we are trying to fix remain in motion. Perhaps that continuum of motion and shifting circumstances prevent us from finding that “One Thing” that would fix everything. Nothing is ever “fixed” – in time or reality. But that’s OK.
Perhaps “perfection” is not that important. Our risks and subsequent adaptations matter much more. Those realtime refinements tend to find the brilliance that set great performances apart. New Year Goals give us direction, however it’s the continual adjustments we make that often have even more impact.
This is a good time to step back and view the bigger picture. Get more efficient workflows and more robust systems in place. Refine skills that are needed or missing. Find and surround yourself with those people who will both challenge and support you on the journey. When we step up to the mic, it’s the moment that matters.
It has been a pleasure this past year working with new voice actors who have shown up in workshops and classes, meeting new clients, and building studio workflows and refinements. I’m also very lucky to have the opportunities to work with peers and coaches who challenge me to continually improve.
It’s all about that process.
The challenges. The setbacks. The corrections. The successes.
That is where the joy comes from.
Best wishes to you and your family through this holiday season.
