In the VO Studio: Reaching for the Right Tool – Tuesday Tech Tip

You don't need a crescent wrench to attach an XLR cable to your mic. Choosing the right tool matters, whether tightening bolts or processing audio.
Even when using simple tools, making an appropriate choice matters.

Sometimes I get the feeling that as our recording tools increase, they can start to distract us from the task at hand: getting a brilliant audition out the door.

As good as the new tools get, none have been created to salvage a lackluster performance. It’s important to keep that in mind as we build up our home voiceover studio and refine our workflow. Sometimes, it can be a better choice to simply leave the tool on the rack.

I’m not saying that the tools don’t have their place. They can polish the distracting rough spots, or enhance the highlights. However, the critical act is finding that moment of flow and brilliance behind the mic,

Once that moment occurs, we can reach for just the right tool. It gets back to the idea of “learning” your recording software – it’s much more important to be able to know that there’s a way to fix something, or get things working a bit more efficiently. The tools are patient. They will be there when we need them.

I just finished up teaching my advanced voiceover studio workshop where we implement a variety of audio tools. It’s a deep dive into the various audio plug-ins and how they can be applied to real world examples. While it’s tempting to make use those alluring tools on every new audition, at the class end I remind everyone that sometimes it’s simpler to just go back in the booth and do it better.

That’s the unique creative spark that each of us brings to our studio.

This information recently went out directly to my email community. Each week I send out a new article about using technology in the home voiceover studio, and how to balance those challenges with the need to be creative behind the microphone.
If you would like to join in to receive those emails the day they publish, please take a moment to share your contact information through this sign up form.
Thank you!
